2000

This slightly sweet, low alcohol (under 5%), aperitif wine has few peers for lightness and charm. However, in about six months, the wine will oxidize, the nose will fall apart, and it will merit a score in the mid-sixties. So the lesson is to either drink it over the next six months, or wait for the 2001 to be released. Notes of apricots, peaches, and honeysuckle blast from the glass of this light-bodied, gorgeously fruity, fresh, slightly sweet Moscato. As I have said many times in the past ... this is a perfect aperitif and/or breakfast wine.

1999

A terrific Moscato d'Asti, this 1999 offers a perfumed nose of apricots, peaches, and spring flowers. In the mouth, it is light-bodied with gentle effervescence, moderate sweetness, and gorgeous purity. This wine a vivacious, beguiling sparkling wine to enjoy during its first 6-12 months of life.

1997

Most Moscato d'Astis essentially taste the same, some are just fruitier or sweeter than others. This slightly effervescent, sexy, seductive wine displays gorgeous tropical fruit and floral notes, very good acidity, which makes it taste more lively than many Moscatos, and a light-bodied finish. The wine is a thrill to drink, but it should be consumed as either an aperitif or with fruit desserts over the next six months.

Moscato d'Autunno

Year Rating

2009

The 2009 Moscato d'Autunno is flat out great, and frankly sets a new benchmark for the level Moscato can reach. This rich, creamy wine flows effortlessly with ripe peaches, apricots, flowers and spices, showing marvelous intensity and magnificent overall balance. Readers will not want to miss this superb Moscato. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Paolo Saracco is one of the reference-point producers of fine Moscato. I always make sure to have at least a few bottles on hand at the house.

2008

The 2008 Moscato d’Autunno is a rich, creamy wine that explodes onto the palate with tons of perfumed fruit. The wine’s depth, precision and elegance all elevate the Moscato d’Autunno to a rarified spot among the world’s great wines. This is impeccable juice! This small-production selection of Saracco’s favorite lots has traditionally been available in Italy, but I am told that will soon change. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2010. Paolo Saracco is justly famous for his Moscatos, but his still whites and reds often merit just as much attention.

91

2007

The 2007 Moscato d’Asti d’Autunno is made in a generous style that seeks greater textural richness. It is perhaps slightly less fresh in its aromatics but notes of earthiness, smoke and minerals give this Moscato an unusual level of complexity. This is a unique and compelling version of Piedmont’s famous dessert wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008.

It shows an unusual but compelling nose of mint, licorice and sage along with plenty of sweet fruit and great length. It is an irresistible wine of much complexity, though it is clearly near the end of its life. 90 points/drink now, tasted 08/05

Pinot Nero

Year Rating

2008

Paolo Saracco is best known for his superb Moscati, but in recent years his Pinot Noir has been just as noteworthy. The 2008 Pinot Nero is a very pretty wine laced with varietal Chambolle-like character and a weightless, elegant personality, all of which adds up to a fabulous glass of wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.

90

The 2006 Pinot Nero is a delicious red loaded with varietal character. This surprising, delicious wine shows terrific energy and richness in a medium-bodied style that reconciles Pinot fruit with an unmistakable sense of Piedmontese structure. This under-the-radar effort is simply delicious. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.
